  1. You can prune away dead, weak or broken wood at any time, but the best time to prune overgrown bushes in your area is early- to mid-March. It may sound drastic, but the recommendation is to cut overgrown plants back to 12 to 18 inches above the soil and to remove all foliage. New growth will sprout about 6 to 8 weeks after this pruning. Keep in mind that little pruning is necessary for camellias that grow compact. Also, pinching the tips of vigorous shoots in spring will stimulate branching. May your camellias bloom with abundance!
