Weeds keep coming up through the mulch around my house. I spend a lot of time pulling them every year. Is there a way to get rid of them completely or at least keep them away for longer?

  1. A high quality layer of landscape fabric or landscape matting applied beneath the mulch will greatly reduce weeds and keep them from popping through. First, rake the existing mulch away, then weed the area. You can either pull the weeds, pour boiling water on the weeds, or use an earth-friendly citrus oil based weed killer. Lay the landscape fabric, then secure the corners and edges of the fabric with the special anchor pins. Finally, spread a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulch on top of the fabric. (You can cut holes or Xs in the fabric to fit around plants.) It's important that you renew the mulch annually or as needed to keep weeds from coming through.
