Question

We got a small, inflatable swimming pool for the kids last year and now the lawn has some dead grass. How do I fix this?

  1. The best fix is to reseed the bare area. To do this you need to create a fine seed bed by loosening the soil to a depth of 6 inches. Mix the grass seed with compost, then evenly distribute the seed/compost mix over the prepared patch. Use the flat end of the rake to gently press the seeds into the soil, or cover the newly seeded area with a 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of seedling potting mix or light compost. Water the area thoroughly and keep slightly moist until the seedlings become established. The key, however, to keeping your grass from dying again is to relocate the kid's pool every day or two. This will take the pressure off the grass and bring in essential sunlight since grass deprived of sunlight will eventually die.
