I have a horrible time with oxalis growing in my flower beds. Is there any weed killer that i can use that will kill it and not harm my flowers?
- Oakland, OR
I understand your frustration with oxalis as it is a pretty hearty weed. I keep mine under control by hand pulling the weeds before the flowers set seed. A thick layer of mulch around your existing plants will block light to the plant as most oxalis are low-growing. The only type of weed killer that won't harm your flowers is a pre-emergence herbicide, such as Preen. Corn gluten meal is a natural pre-emergent weed killer that is also very effective. As pre-emergent herbicides, both work by preventing root formation in germinating seeds. As such, they need to be applied before seeds germinate, which for most is usually in early to late spring. Good luck!
