How to prune a tree without killing it.

I cut away dead stems from the tree one year and the tree died over the next 1-2 years.

  1. My guess is that cutting away dead stems from your tree is not the culprit of the tree's demise. The odds are that the tree was already in the process of dying--it just took a year or two to do it. Chances are that a disease did it in, but other possibilities include pest insects such as borers, or even old age. Pruning can be done at anytime as long as it's light pruning or to cut away dead, diseased, or broken branches or stems. Just make sure your pruners or shears are sharp!
