How often should I de-thatch and when is the best time?

The best time to dethatch in your area is early fall, which is right about now. This gives the lawn plenty of time to recover before winter sets in. As to the next best time, that would be early spring. If de-thatching in fall, be sure to do it at least 30 days before your last mowing for the season. If done in spring, de-thatch before the grass starts to green up.
Dethatching, which is physically removing the thatch, need only be done once every year or two. Even more important is aeration.
Aeration--which is the process of perforating the soil by punching holes in the lawn or removing small cores or plugs of soil--breaks up moderate thatch buildup, reduces soil compaction, and allows your lawn to breathe and water and nutrients to have better access to grass roots by loosening the ground beneath your turf. It also reduces thatch by increasing soil microbes in the thatch layer that digest the thatch. Ideally you should aerate your lawn one to two times a year when the thatch layer is less than 1.5 inches.
