Hi Kris. We live in Phoenix, Arizona. When is the best time to plant new rose bushes and prune existing rose bushes.

  1. This is a great question, as the planting and pruning period for roses is specific to the growing area. January is all about roses in the Phoenix area as this is the ideal time to plant bareroot roses and prune existing rose bushes. You can extend planting dates for bareroot roses and pruning for existing bushes up until the end of February. Roses in containers can be planted anytime except summer, which is now. Roses will perform better is given afternoon shade in the summer and mulched to conserve soil moisture with a 3- to 4-inch layer of organic material such as pine needles or ground western cedar. The added bonus is that the decaying mulch will enrich the soil, improve drainage, and bring the pH to a better range for plants.
