Question

Hi Kris-my sunflowers are already budding but now it looks like little bites are taken out of the leaves-what is eating them? I thought they were a hearty flower.

  1. Sunflowers are certainly sturdy plants, but they're not necessarily pest-free. And with so many new varieties and hybrids ranging in size from 6 inch miniatures to 12 foot giants, some types are more susceptible than others. Take a good look underneath the leaves and throughout the entire plant. If you see any caterpillars or worm like larvae, then your best defensive is Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), an organic, spore forming bacterium that is toxic to caterpillars but not to people, birds and other wildlife. If you see small bugs, then spray leaves with an insecticidal soap spray available at any garden center.
