Rayman Legends for Wii U Preview
Rayman Legends is a video game designed for the Wii U video game console from Nintendo that will be released in September of 2013. It’s the fifth core title in the Rayman series of video games that has been rising in popularity since the release of the original Rayman title in 1996.
This game will be a sequel to the 2011 release Rayman Origins that was available for the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Judging from pre-release information that’s known about Rayman Legends, the title has more than enough new content to keep fans of the series coming back for more and to get new fans onboard in the most fun way possible.
Rayman Legends plot
The general plot of Rayman Legends follows the four main characters of Globox, the Teensies and Rayman himself. The protagonists get sucked into a mysterious world through paintings in a tent found in an enchanted forest. The general mechanics of the game are similar in concept to the classic Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64.
Each of the paintings in the tent represent a different world that the player can enter. Each world has a variety of different levels and objectives that the player must complete before moving on to the next painting. Player controlled characters can fight, run and jump through hordes of enemies as they try to battle their way from one end of the world to the other.
Enemies that players will fight in Rayman Legends include things like vampires, ghosts and even dragons. Previous enemies from other Rayman games like the Livid Dead are also rumored to make an appearance. As Rayman Legends is a standard platform game, the layout and design of levels is reminiscent to recent entries in the Super Mario Bros. series. Each level is essentially designed like a puzzle. Characters can gather items as they figure out how to move from one part of the level to the next and from world to world.
Rayman Legends will make use of the Wii U’s multiplayer capabilities. Four players can control each of the four on-screen characters simultaneously using the regular Wii U gamepad. A fifth player can control a character called Murfy using a Wii U gamepad touch screen. Murfy can help the other four players by activating various buttons, gathering items necessary to complete objectives and even by grabbing onto enemies and assisting during regular battle.
Certain levels are designed specifically to be played with multiple people. You and your friends must work together to complete certain goals simultaneously or to activate certain mechanisms in a limited timeframe to advance to later parts of the game. The well thought-out and well-defined multiplayer functionality helps each player feel equally important at all times, as you’ll literally need all of your friends working together to beat the game under those conditions.
If you choose to play Rayman Legends by yourself, you’ll do so by going through the majority of the game as Rayman himself. A mandatory switch to the Murfy character will happen during certain sections of levels where that functionality is required. Even if you’re playing the game by yourself, you’ll still be able to use both the regular Wii U gamepad and the gamepad’s touch screen to maximize the experience.
Rayman Legends also features an “online challenges” mode that will be released exclusively via the Nintendo eShop. The “online challenges” mode will be released in April of 2013 for no charge to current owners of the game.
One thing to note is that Rayman Legends was originally announced as a title that would be exclusive to Microsoft’s Wii U game console. Things eventually changed, however, as the game will ship in September of 2013 for both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 in addition to the Wii U.
