5 Fun Fall Family Activities

Leaves, pumpkins, scarecrows, Indian corn…the signs of fall are everywhere. The crisp autumn air and festive decorations make this a great time of year to have a little fun with your
family.  Here are some terrific ideas for outdoor activities that both kids and adults will love.

Girl-with-pumpkinsCheck out a corn maze

Children have a great time winding through these farmer’s labyrinths. Some corn mazes even feature various stations with trivia questions or clues that help everyone move through the maze. Working out the puzzles can even be educational. Put on a pair of old shoes and go solve the stalks for an afternoon of fun.

Visit a pumpkin patch

Farmers often feature pumpkin patches near their corn mazes, so in some cases you can enjoy both of these first two activities on one day trip. Take the kids and let them pick their own pumpkins to take home. They’ll have fun and you can use whatever they pick out to decorate your front porch or yard. You can even carve them up as another fun family activity and use them as jack-o’-lantern decorations for Halloween.

Take a hay ride

Mom-and-daughter-at-pumpkin-patchMany of us have fond memories of taking fall hay rides as children. Pass that tradition on to your own kids this fall. There’s no better way to enjoy the invigorating cooler temperatures of the season than to take a little trip atop bales of hay. You can even take along a thermos filled with apple cider to sip along the way. Lots of farmers offer daily jaunts around their farms this time of year, so it’s easy to find a location near you.

See how apple butter is made

Autumn and apples go hand in hand. Many churches make apple butter as a way to raise funds for their congregation. Find a local church that’s whipping up a batch this fall and show your children how this popular fall treat is made. Kids love seeing the apples and spices cooking down in big black kettles. You can experience the wonderful seasonal aroma and even take home a jar. You’ll give your family a great afternoon and help out a good cause at the same
time.

Attend a fall festival

At certain fall festivals, you may even be able to do all of the previous activities on this list. Plus, you’ll probably find food vendors and various types of wholesome family entertainment. Carnival games and inflatable bouncy castles are also popular at these events. Many farms, schools, churches and other organizations hold these festivals every year. Check out one in your community and plan a day of fun for the whole family.
