DIY Holiday Gifts that kids can make!

Christmas craftsby Janet Grischy

Christmas craft projects are fun for kids, so why not extend their handmade holiday creativity to gift-giving. They’ll feel proud when they give homemade gifts they’ve created themselves, and it develops their creativity as well as their self-esteem. Encourage your kids to do-it-yourself with these three easy DIY gift ideas.

Microwave brownie in a mug

This kid’s gift idea takes about two minutes to make, but your child will want to wrap it, too. Here’s what you need to make a delicious mug brownie for a teacher, grandparent or other relative:

A shiny new Christmas mug
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
A dash of salt
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tablespoons flour

Melt the butter for about 15 seconds in the microwave. Right in the mug, have your child mix the first four ingredients with a whisk. Then have her stir in the sugar, flour, and cocoa, whisking each time. Microwave for 60 to 90 seconds, then let it cool before wrapping in plastic wrap and adding a bow.

Tie-dye T

Tie-dye can be messy and a little tricky for children, but not with this neat kit. Tie-dyeing this way is easy, and your child can make a cool gift for a sweet sister or a groovy dad. This kit was designed to simplify DIY for kids. Everything she needs is included for an overnight process that’s simple, safe and fun.

Potholders

This steel potholder loom is virtually the same one you may have used when you made homemade gifts as a kid. Kids can make a thoughtful gift for mom with this nostalgic loom that even grandma will remember. Loom, instructions and multi-colored loops are included.
