Fifteen years ago, a dear friend taught me a vital lesson in character and grace. We were pregnant at the same time, both carrying boys, though hers was due two months before mine. This was her fifth child, my second, and we loved sharing this exciting time together. Then, just a few weeks before her son was due, we learned the unthinkable. His tiny heart was beating no more and she would now have to go through the pain of labor and delivery, only for the chance to hold her son for a short time before he was taken away from her.

We grieved for our friends but didn’t know the words to comfort them.  I made a few awkward visits but then stayed away, afraid my continuing pregnancy would be too hard a reminder for my friend of all she had lost.

Just two months later, three weeks early,  I started mild contractions. With my friend’s sorrow fresh in my mind, I stopped at the doctor’s office to have things checked. After a few tests, I was immediately rushed to the hospital. Our son was in severe distress and was immediately taken by emergency caesarean, tiny and shriveled, weighing only four pounds. Like my friend, something had gone wrong with the pregnancy and he didn’t receive adequate nourishment or oxygen for the last few weeks. After delivery, I didn’t have a chance to hold him before he was whisked away and later taken by ambulance two hours away to the regional children’s hospital, where he would spend several weeks in the newborn ICU.

We had only been a few days into this long, twisting journey we didn’t even comprehend when my friend showed up at that faraway hospital, still raw and grieving herself, with hugs and goodies, stuffed toys for him and games for our older daughter – a basket filled with love and caring.

She has continued that steady caring through the last fourteen years. Meals and cards, a plate of sweet rolls, even pitching in to help me plant a flower garden. The traumatic events around our son’s birth left him with cerebral palsy and he requires total care now. He is nonverbal, but when my friend or any of her family stops by, he gives his happy squeal of delight and smiles at them with pure, sweet love.

My friend taught me then that reaching out to help others, even when it hurts, is the very best way to heal a broken heart.  That’s the message of WOODROSE MOUNTAIN, my new book for HQN. Former rehab physical therapist Evie Blanchard doesn’t want to be dragged into the lives of Brodie Thorne or his brain-injured daughter Taryn. When she reluctantly agrees temporarily to help with Taryn’s recovery and begins to fall for both Taryn and Brodie, Evie finds the wounds in her own heart begin to mend – just as my friend’s many kindnesses over the years helped ease her pain. And my own.

About the author

RaeAnn Thayne’s love for reading and writing led her to journalism, and she worked for fifteen years as a newspaper reporter and editor.

Through it all, she dreamed of writing the kind of stories she loved best. She started writing romance fiction in 1990 and sold her first book five years later. Since then, she’s published more than two-dozen novels and that same number of short stories.

RaeAnne finds inspiration from the rugged northern Utah mountains where she lives with her husband and three children.

Back of the Book

Evie Blanchard was at the top of her field in the city of angels. But when an emotional year forces her to walk away from her job as a physical therapist, she moves from Los Angeles to Hope’s Crossing seeking a quieter life. So the last thing she needs is to get involved with the handsome, arrogant Brodie Thorne and his injured daughter, Taryn.

A self-made man and single dad, Brodie will do anything to get Taryn the rehabilitation she needs…even if it means convincing Evie to move in with them. And despite her vow to keep an emotional distance, Evie can’t help but be moved by Taryn’s spirit, or Brodie’s determination to win her help—and her heart. With laughter, courage and more than a little help from the kindhearted people of Hope’s Crossing, Taryn may get the healing she deserves—and Evie and Brodie might just find a love they never knew could exist.
