Featured Read: Forsaken by B.J. Daniels
From the Author:
Some books steal your heart. Forsaken stole mine. I had wanted to do a story about an old sheepherder and his “tender,” a green young man who’d unintentionally hired on to help take two thousand sheep back into the Beartooth Mountains for three long summer months.
I’d interviewed an old sheepherder and his tender back when I was a newspaper reporter. The old sheepherder had said little, but the young tender had been delighted to see another human after such a long time in the wilderness. He told harrowing stories about epic storms, treacherous remote country and grizzlies attacking the sheep.
While this was interesting, I didn’t have a book in mind until sheep rancher Maddie Conner came to mind. Maddie has had more than her share of heartbreak and loss. But when faced with trouble, this strong, independent, capable woman rises to the occasion. She stole my heart. It’s why I gave her a hero who could measure up in Deputy Sheriff Bentley Jamison.
After her young tender comes out of the mountains scared out of his mind, Maddie must ride back into the Beartooths to find out what has happened to her sheepherder. While she would prefer to go alone rather than have greenhorn Deputy Sheriff Jamison along, he is having none of it. Jamison fears that what is waiting for them back in the mountains is a crime scene.
A reviewer recently compared FORSAKEN to the TV and book series Longmire. I’m honored. While this book is a murder mystery, it is also a love story that’s not just about two people who must fight to beat the odds, but about a love for Montana and its history.
Since the late 19th century, sheep ranchers in this part of Montana trailed their flocks into the high, rugged backcountry of the Beartooths. In 2003, after three months and 150 miles, the last band of sheep made this arduous round trip for summer range, ending the era. This book is dedicated to them.
Forsaken is the third book in the Beartooth, Montana series.
