A Kmart Books Exclusive Look into Reshaping Ideas and Trace of Fever by Lori Foster
As an author, one of the questions I hear most often is: Where do you get your ideas? Most times, I haven’t a clue. Ideas for characters, for plots, for settings, just sort of present themselves to me without rhyme or reason. My mind wanders, and comes back with a theme for a trilogy of stories.
But in the case of my current Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor series, starting with the first book, WHEN YOU DARE (HQN May 2011), I know exactly where I got the idea: from a movie.
For someone who is always plotting, movies are a big mind-break. I can so easily get engrossed in a horror or action flick (my favorites!) while munching popcorn and drinking a cola that, for a short time, I can quiet the characters in my head. We go to the movies a lot, usually twice a week.
“Taken” with Liam Neeson, that was a top pick for me. He’s one of my favorite actors, and the human-trafficking theme was definitely billed as action. Lots of kicking-butt, high stakes suspense, and heroic moves. Right up my alley!
Liam plays a father with special skills who is out to rescue his daughter from traffickers who plan to sell her to the highest bidder. Unfortunately, in his quest to find his daughter, he’s forced to walk past other young ladies caught in the same predicament, so that the traffickers won’t know he’s closing in.
Horrific! Thinking how difficult that would be for Liam’s character and the poor enslaved women, well… my muse got a big kick start on ideas! As a writer of romance, I NEEDED a hero who could save them all, a hero who would insist on nothing less.
In WHEN YOU DARE, Dare Macintosh travels into Tijuana to rescue his best friend’s sister - but he comes out with two women, not one. Molly Alexander doesn’t fit the bill of the typical woman preyed on by traffickers, and she has no idea why she was taken. She and Dare pair up to uncover a sinister plot, destroy human trafficking rings, and in the process, they fall in love.
But Dare doesn’t work alone, so you also meet Trace Rivers. He gets his own book in June 2011.
TRACE OF FEVER.
It was Trace’s sister that Dare rescued from Tijuana. She was taken as retaliation against Trace, because of his work against human traffickers. For a man of Trace’s skill set and lethal ability, it’s unbearable that he couldn’t go in after his sister himself. He trusts Dare 100%, but he’s a man of action, not one to delegate responsibility. Now it’s personal, so he’s amped up his efforts against human smugglers, and infiltrated a far-reaching trafficking ring. He’s ready to bring down everyone from the lowest driver to the mastermind. The only thing standing in his way is Priscilla Patterson, a woman who shows up at the worst possible time, claiming to be the king pin’s daughter.
Trace knows instinctively that Priss has her own deadly revenge in mind, so he has to work with her in order to keep her safe. In TRACE OF FEVER you also meet Jackson Savor, the operative who falls in love with Trace’s sister. As a victim of human traffickers, she’ll need a very special man to not only keep her safe, but to help heal her heart. Jackson’s book, SAVOR THE DANGER, is out in July 2011.
