Band Saws and Replacement Blades Keep You Sharp

Band saws are tremendously useful tools in a woodworking shop, and Sears has the band saw replacement blades you need to keep your equipment operating at top performance. Sears carries thousands replacement blades by Craftsman, Diteq, Husqvarna and other fine brands.

The quality of a band saw blade cut is determined by the type of tooth. Regular-toothed blades are the most common band saw blades. They are suitable for both general cut-off work and detailed contour sawing of most materials. The blade teeth are flat and have deep spaces between each blade. These spaces are called gullets, and the angle of the tooth is called the rake.

Hook-toothed blades have a plus 10-degree rake to give them an aggressive digging action. They generally feature fewer teeth per inch of cutting surface than regular-toothed blades and are great for wood, hard plastics and soft non-ferrous metals.

When a hook-toothed blade has a zero rake, it is called a skip-toothed blade. The tooth distribution is actually the same as the hook-toothed blade, but the flatness eliminates the hooked appearance and makes it seem as though teeth are missing.

Variable-toothed blades have an irregular sequencing of alternating rake angles and gullet depths. These blades create less cutting vibration and operate more quietly.

Carbon steel band saw blades are the least durable replacement blades. However, they are also the least expensive. The low cost makes carbon steel band saw blades a great option for the average woodworking shop, and Sears carries nearly 50 carbon steel band saw blades that are offered by no other store. Sears also carries metal band saw blades. These blades are made from carbon steel, but the teeth are made from a high speed steel alloy that incorporates a small percentage of vanadium to provide markedly increased hardness, durability and heat resistance. Carbide tipped band saw blades are unquestionably the hardest and most durable replacement blades available for band saws. Carbide is almost three times as strong as carbon steel, and carbide tipped band saw blades outlast both carbon steel and bi-metal band saw blades by a very cost-effective margin.

Maintaining band saw blades is a complex task, and large commercial operations have employees called sawdoctors who do nothing but sharpen and maintain band saw blades. Private woodworking shops and hobbyists simply replace the blades. When it is time to replace your band saw blade, head to Sears to get exactly what you need at a great price.
