Drills

Power drills make it easy to drill holes and drive screws. Cordless drills remove the need to string power cords. However, you may enjoy the raw power from a corded drill. Standard, impact or hammer drills range from 4.0V up to 19.2V. From Craftsman, DeWalt, Panasonic and more, you'll find the drill that fits your needs and budget. Shop Sears for drills and portable power tools.

Cordless Drills

Cordless drills have made everything from assembling Christmas presents to installing mini-blinds a little easier. Because these rechargeable items eliminate the need to constantly dodge a power cord while you're working, they're safer as well. Many items, like swing sets, fencing, and construction equipment, require bolts and screws to be tightened even though their remote position doesn't have direct access to an electrical outlet. Instead of using a long extension cord or setting up a portable generator, rechargeable drills and the appropriate accessories can make this a simple task without the need for an external power source.

Known as the best place to purchase any type of tool, Sears offers a wide selection of cordless drills, including popular brands like Craftsman, Dewalt, Makita and Hitachi. In many cases, cordless drills come as part of a more extensive set of power tools that could include other cordless items like high-powered lights, reciprocating saws and circular saws. Although cordless drills are the most commonly used battery-operated power tool, most homeowners and craftsmen find that all of these portable items are useful.

When shopping for a complete set of power tools, always read the description carefully to find out how many batteries are included as well as the power rating. Some sets offer a number of interchangeable batteries while others only provide one. Most shoppers find that they get the most use from their cordless tools if they have two or more batteries. This not only allows you to use more than one tool at a time, but it also lets you quickly switch to a fully-charged battery as needed. In most cases, a higher voltage rating translates into a more powerful tool.

When selecting either a cordless drill or an entire set of portable tools, you should also evaluate the battery charger that comes with the product. The required charging time can vary from quick chargers that take only a single hour to slower units that can take eight hours or more to fully charge a completely drained battery. Quick chargers are available as an additional accessory to fit almost any battery.

The rechargeable battery itself is a consumable resource. Although you can expect it to offer years of use, replacement will eventually be necessary. To get the longest life from each battery, never store it at extreme temperatures or allow it to sit idle for extended periods. While older chargers could over-charge and ruin batteries, modern products trickle charge the battery and have automatic cut-off features to protect your investment. Replacement batteries are always available if you have lost or damaged a battery or if you would simply like a spare.
