Though often seen as simple tools, there are actually a lot of nuances to consider when choosing the correct type of screw. While they all work in basically the same way, slight variations in a screw's design can change the way it's used, as well as the types of applications that this fastener is best used for. While it may not seem to be the case, screws are actually much more complex and useful tools than most people realize.

When looking at screws, one of the first things to consider is what project you are completing and what the final look requires. This will determine what type of screw tip you are going to purchase. If you need the screw to fasten securely to a surface without protruding, for example, the fastener of choice is the countersunk screw. Countersunk screws has a screw head featuring a flat top and angled sides. This allows the builder to push the screw deep into the project, creating a finish that is flush with the wood, plastic or other surface. When a flush finish is not necessary, look for one of the many available round head screws. Round head screws have a curved top surface with a flat bottom to the head. Instead of sinking below the wood's surface, a round head screw sits directly on the project, protruding above the wood, metal or plastic that is being held together. Round head screws often add a decorative look to the finished project, as they are so visible. Because of this, you can often find round head screws in a wider variety of finishes, making it easier to match the look you need. Round head screws also feature numerous different shapes on the screw head, accommodating all types of screwdrivers, from Phillips to hex tips.

Besides differences in basic designs of screws, this versatile fastener is also made in specialized versions specifically applicable to different trades and materials. Fastening to concrete, for example, can be a challenge, as the material is extremely hard and difficult to penetrate. Because of that, standard screws do not work for this task. Instead, a specialized concrete screw is needed whenever any material is attached to concrete. Concrete screws have sharp tips and are made with extremely hard materials, allowing them to be driven into an almost rock-like surface. Professionals who work with drywall, however, have the opposite problem. Drywall can be a very loose and porous surface and regular screws can easily fall out of the material. Carefully designed drywall screws have a longer tip that allows full penetration through the drywall and into underlying studs for a firm hold.
