Sears carries dozens of lawn tractor blades from well-known brands like Craftsman, Husqvarna and Black and Decker. Each replacement blade is designed for a specific cutting deck size and for specific types of cutting actions. Sears also carries accessories such as mounting kits and removal tools to make replacing damaged or dulled lawn tractor blades as easy as possible.

Cutting blades are the general-purpose blades supplied with most mowers and lawn tractors. They are sometimes called low-lift blades. On cutting blades, a portion of the back edge of the blade is raised up toward the deck. This slight twisting generates an upward draft as the blade rotates and pulls grass upwards to produce a cleaner and more uniform cut. The draft generated by the canted blade exhausts through the side or rear chute of the deck, and cut grass is expelled along with the air.

Bagging blades are similar, but have an even greater raised twist and provide a much stronger upward draft as they rotate. Bagging blades are sometimes called high-lift blades for this reason. The greater lift produces a stronger air flow that carries cut grass through the chute and packs it into a bagging accessory. This accessory collects all of the cut grass clippings and eliminates the need for raking.

Uncollected grass clippings can form a dense mat of thatch that is harmful to the health of the lawn. If collected through raking or by a bagger during the cutting, the clippings make excellent composting material and can produce rich soil nutrients. The composting process is simple but time consuming, and many homeowners prefer to take a shortcut.

Mulching blades provide that shortcut by eliminating the need for raking or bagging. In addition to the standard high-lift design of the bagging blade, mulching blades incorporate notched or raked teeth into the contoured lifting edge of the blade. Grass clippings are whirled beneath the deck for longer periods of time and are therefore subjected to multiple cuts per blade. The end result is much smaller grass clippings. These smaller pieces settle down into the grass instead of layering on top of it.

Just as mulching a shrub helps retain moisture around the shrub, mulching lawn tractor blades help maintain soil moisture in the lawn. Smaller pieces of cut grass also decompose more quickly than larger pieces, and the grass clippings return nutrients to the soil as they decompose.
