Indoor Space Heaters Provide Warmth on Cold Nights

Space heaters can quickly turn a drafty room into a cozy living area or working space. Several different types and models are available in the market, including electric, ceramic, infrared and oil-driven units. And Sears has them all. We have everything you need from natural gas space heaters to convection space heaters.

When purchasing an electric space heater for your home, be aware of safety precautions involving its use. Electric space heaters can be dangerous if they are placed too close to flammable items such as furniture or clothing. As a general rule, it is important to place electric space heaters at least three feet away from other objects to avoid potential combustion. These units produce a tremendous amount of heat in a relatively short period of time. They feature a fine mesh covering that protects consumers against the interior heated filament and control dials at the top of the unit. Many of the newer models are considered to be much safer than older space heaters, which did not have as many safety features. For example, many newer models have been redesigned to automatically shut off if they are kicked or suddenly rearranged. This helps prevent fires and other accidents. The newer heaters also are far more energy efficient than their older counterparts, producing steady warmth without wasting electricity.

Oil-driven space heaters usually resemble miniature wall radiators. They feature a ribbed metal design that is held together by a flat base on wheels. The wheels make it easy for a person to move the space heater from room to room without having to lift the unit. The heater is activated when plugged into the wall. Setting typically range from owto ighto accommodate the various temperatures needed to heat a room.

The oil-driven space heater, which usually requires a few minutes to reach the highest heat setting, features an automatic temperature switch that shuts the unit off when it reaches the desired temperature. Should the temperature fall, the heater automatically resumes producing heat as long as it is plugged in and turned on. Not all oil-driven space heaters require you to add oil. Many are sold with the oil already inside. If you choose to purchase an oil-driven model, you will enjoy your exceptional space heatersenergy efficiency.

Ceramic space heaters offer exceptional safety. They also are among the most stylish of space heaters. Ceramic heaters generally take the form of a tapered tower with a discrete screen. Some ceramic heaters are more cube-like in appearance. There are a few models which allow you to adjust the heat settings via remote control. This feature is particularly wonderful if you are occupied with a task and want to easily adjust the heat. Like their electric and oil-driven counterparts, new ceramic heaters are energy efficient. Most importantly, ceramic heaters are among the quietest of all space heaters.

Convection space heaters can be fairly noisy, while oil-driven heaters produce a quiet but persistent ticking as the metal expands and contracts. Ceramic heaters produce a low, pleasing murmur that quickly fades into the background. If you need to warm your bedroom, you may elect to purchase a ceramic heater for its high heat production and quiet operation.

Infrared space heaters are usually the most luxurious of the units. They tend to feature exquisite wooden paneling and state-of-the-art controls. The infrared space heaters are also exceptionally energy efficient. They distribute heat evenly and absorb infrared energy. They are also designed to produce purified, heated air. These heaters may not be the best choice for consumers with small children. But if you prize exceptional style and refinement, you may prefer the elegant aesthetics of an infrared space heater.

When buying a space heater, make sure you consider not only the size of the room or house but the amount of power required to operate the heater. A large tower heater may not be needed for an exceptionally small space, just as a small electric heater may not be able to effectively heat a large open space. Purchasing multiple space heaters can be problematic. Space heaters operating simultaneously can produce short circuits within your house electrical fuse box. The best solution is to purchase one or two high quality space heaters and move them around the house as needed. You should always turn off space heaters when they are not in use. During long vacations or absences, unplug and store your space heaters.
