DieHard Microprocessor Battery Charger works as advertised

I purchased this charger for use on many types of batteries I own; automobile, motorcycle, garden tractor, deep cycle etc. It has worked flawlessly on every battery so far, even bringing a deep cycle battery I thought was hopeless up to full charge. It works far better than any charger I have owned in the past, and I have had quite a few.

I cannot comment on its long term durability since I have only owned it for a couple of months, but it does what it advertises and does it well so far.

Didn't Last

Used maybe 5 times over a year and doesn't work anymore.

I bought at Kmart and lost the receipt so I can't return it.

Recommend you spend your money on a USA made product.

JUNK!

I would stay far away from this charger. I bought one and had to return it six weeks after i bought it. The clerk who gave me a replacement told me that they get a lot of returns on this product. The replacement lasted me about 6 months before i noticed that it only charged the batteries to about 67%, then it would quit charging. Although this charger has nice features, it is not worth the money I wasted buying this.

Great Charger

I bought this charger from Sears. I have the DieHard Gold version. I have used it for about 2 years now. It has worked perfectly. I did some testing with a almost full standard lead-acid battery and a digital multimeter. It does indeed appear to have three stages. On the 10 Amp Rapid Charge setting: - After pressing the 10 Amp Rapid Charge setting the charger is putting in about 900 mA. I don't see much movement on the voltage. I think its checking the battery. - Next it jumped up to 16 volts and about 3 amps. The battery percentage on the charger quickly increased by 1%. Then the charger started reducing the current. It went from 3 amps, 2 amps to 1400 mA within a few seconds. It looks like its monitoring the time it takes to charge. If it goes too fast it reduces the current. - The charge complete light comes on when the voltage drops from about 16.00 volts to between 15.90 volts and 15.95 volts. On my multimeter. - After the charge complete light comes on and 100% is reached. The charger is still charging, but on the top-off stage. I was showing a current input of 1400 mA while it was reducing the voltage to 13.15 volts. - Once it dropped to 13.15 volts the charger cycled between 13.14 and 13.19 volts. It did this about 4 or 5 times, Each time it would reduce the current until it took about 30 to 45 minutes for it to go from 13.14 volts to 13.19 volts. - The float charge for me showed it charging the battery at about 20 to 30 mA. It starts at 13.14 volts and charges until 13.19 volts. Shuts down until the voltage drops to 13.14 then starts over. Note: All numbers are based on my multimeter. Because its a smart charger it does have conditions that a dumb charger would not have. Its best if the battery is disconnected from any load, or removed from vehicle or vessel. With any computer controlled vehicle or accessory their will be a minor current draw even with everything turned off. Larger phantom current draws it appears to fault out the charger. Best to disconnect or remove battery if possible. Second, the battery needs to be hooked up before the charger is plugged into AC power. Battery first, then plug in charger. In summary, this charger has worked perfectly for what I have needed from it. I do solar, and long term vehicle storage. I have some AGM batteries that this charger can properly charge. This is a real deal smart charger that I can leave my batteries hooked up to long term without worrying.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Not up to the task

Does not play well with others: Drops out on engine start mode; goes in & out of charge mode when it should continue. Less useful than my 1977 model.

Buy this charger FIRST

I have bought and returned 3 different Schumacher chargers over the past 2 days because of problems.  I finally went to Sears and found this charger on sale.  I liked it because it would charge both 6V and 12V batteries; had a reverse polarity cutoff switch; and allowed the user to select from 4 different battery settings.   The only thing it lacked was an ON/OFF switch--you plugged the charger into a power cord to turn it on.

This charger worked quickly and accurately--I measured the voltage with a multimeter to verify the charge when charging was completed.   If you are having problems with buying a battery charger, try this unit.  This is the Gold unit and is similar to the Platinum charger except the Platinum charger does not charge 6V batteries.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Lasted less than 6 hours... JUNK

If there was a rating less than 1 star I would have given it to this charger. I bought this to charge my 6v RV Batteries. Wanted to charge each separately to help equalize them. I disconnected the batteries from the coach and proceeded to charge the first one. It initially said 65% charge. I started charging at 12 amps for about 30 minutes. Then I changed rate to 30 amps. It charged for about 2 hours but display did not change from 65% So I unplugged it and plugged it back in... Now it said 69%. I then set it to 30 amps and it started increasing charge percent every few minutes. Got to about 77% and sat there.. A couple hours later I checked on it and it was off. I tried unplugging and replugging in but nothing on the display. I noticed the transformer seemed pretty warm so I let it cool down. After cooling same result... DEAD CHARGER. So it appears this charger does NOT have a thermal shutdown if it gets hot... it just dies! I also noticed when it WAS working that it would increase the voltage to about 7.5v and then the percentage would go up one point, then the voltage would go down to 7v. It seemed to cycle this way until it does the 'lockup' everyone is talking about here. I do not recommend this charger.... unreliable

Overall
good charger, but the fan died

I bought one of these about a year ago to recharge a truck battery after I'd left my lights on, and to float charge a gel-cell battery. It worked well, except that it reset and did not re-start after power outages. Not a big deal for most people, but a pain for keeping a float charge going. The fan started out quiet, but got noisy within a month or so. Sounded like a bearing was going. About six months of use and the fan died. My suggestion would be for them to use a computer-style fan without a bearing; I've had desktop machines running for five years or more with no fan failures. I finally found my receipt, so I'll take advantage of their three-year warranty on this charger.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

This in my opinion is a piece of garbage

I needed a batery charger for my Craftman lawn tractor, which by the way was delivered to my house with a low battery. I took the time to charge it using my cars battery and was able to mow my lawn for a few weekends before it ran low again. Realizing that the battery was the issue I decided to purchase this battery charger from Sears since I had bought the lawn tractor there as well. In my opinion this charger is not worth the cardboard box it came in. From the very moment I attached the cables to the battery and plugged it in, it has not worked, The red check light came on and no matter what I do or setting I select it remains on and will not charge the battery. I have left it plugged in for several hours in the silly belief that perhaps it just needed to "think" for a littl bit before going to work...*sigh*. Thoroughly disappointed and tired of fiddling around with it trying to get it to work, I plan on returning it to Sears in the morning.
