Augen The Book - a very decent low-price Kindle clone July 30, 2010

I now see the Augen "The Book" eReader at less than the Kmart sale price of $90, and for that price it is indeed a very good, lower function Kindle/Nook clone. For us it is a positive to be able to work with our pre-teen and use this  "The Book" in conjunction with a very good open source PC program, Calibre, to manage eBooks on the device.

I agree the iPad clone is more functional, but once that comes out this "The Book" will probably drop under $70 and fit the niche for usable eBook reader, with decent PC tethered support, very readable in low light. Our pre-teen had been having trouble with books that are now finer print. When travelling, the Kindle/nook eBook readers were too dim in the car at night. This one was very clear, has a basic MP3 player and photo display with it. We did NOT want ubiquitous WiFi access wherever we go, so "The Book" fills the bill for us!

    Best, Mark

Augen The Book 7" eReader is not worth it's price September 20, 2010

I must say that I was quite dissatisfied with Augen The Book 7" eReader. It just does not reaches the desired standard anyone would expect after paying that amount of money. Page turns take a lot of time. Processor is unbearably slow. Screen is glossy and not readable in sunlight. It is quite heavy too which makes holding it in hand for hours a difficult task. There are better alternatives out there. Skip this thing.

sucks! sd card interface is flaky power jack broke after a month October 23, 2010

    Pros:
bright in low light, color, lightweight,Open source management program, Calibre
    Cons:
bad battery, locks up,bad customer service, does not support compressed media, poor customer support

    This sucks!'

sd card slot is flaky at best, works when it wants to.

the usb port is slow and locks up at times.  the power jack stopped working after a month, the plug is to loose the plug doesn't make contact

the screen switches orientation way to easy, hard to read on a moving bus.

At 25 dollars this would still be to costly for what you get.

    The Book - Ereader October 18, 2010

    Pros:
    common eBook format support
    Cons:
    bad battery,bad customer service

I had wanted an ereader for almost a year, but the price turned me off of them. I finally got enough money saved up to get one and chose this one because of the lower price.

I took it home and it read regular ebooks fine, but it wouldn't connect to the Internet. I got online and went to the Augen website and could find nothing there to help me. So, I contacted customer support. They told me to download something and follow the directions. I tried it more than ten times. The directions made no sense and I still couldn't get the thing to work right. I took the reader back in less than 24 hours of purchase and got my money back. There was no way I was going to spend that much money on something that was not goign to work and the customer support was so poor on.

My advice is to get something better made and with better support.

Average, not the best October 02, 2010

The Augen Book 7 inch reader is not the best reader out there. Let me start by saying, it is very afforadable. It definitely does its job. However, the quality of the light is not very readable, especially with old eyes. I suggest getting a reader with a clearer view.

    Don't purchase this item!!!!! September 22, 2010

    Cons:
could have better eBook formatting, locks up,very slow browser, bad battery

I purchased this item three weeks ago and still have not been able to read a purchased book on it.  I have purchased and downloaded books.  When I open the book file, I just get a blank page.  The books I'm trying to open are compatible, but no luck.  The internet is unbelievably slow.  So slow that you could try to open a page, go cook dinner, come back and it may have opened by then.  The customer support for this product is only open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.  Living on the west coast, I still have not been able to contact them and actually get hold of someone.  If you try to contact their online support they just tell you to call customer support.  This is a huge waste of money.  I am buying a Nook and tossing this thing in the trash.  I will NEVER buy an Augen product again.
