Learn the facts, know the risks
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), more than 23 million people in the United States (approximately 8% of the population) have diabetes. If the present trends continue, 1 in 3 Americans – and 1 in 2 minorities – born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetimes. About 1 in every 400 to 600 children and adolescents has Type 1 diabetes. In 2007, 1.6 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people 20 years or older.
Complications of diabetes are:
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of new cases of adult blindness in the United States.
Neuropathy affects 30-70% of diabetic patients.
People with diabetes account for nearly half of all amputations in the United States.
Coronary heart disease is the most common cause of death in adults with diabetes.
Hypertension and dyslipidemia (high cholesterol) are more likely in adults with diabetes.
9% of adults with diabetes report having a stroke.

How's your memory holding up? Get screened now.
Occasional lapses in memory, such as having difficulty recalling a person's name, become more common in our 50s and 60s. They are a normal sign of aging.
But other types of memory loss, such as temporarily becoming disoriented in a familiar place, may indicate a more serious form of memory impairment.
How do you distinguish normal "senior moments" from more worrisome memory lapses? That's where memory screening tests come in.
Memory screening tests make sense for anyone concerned about memory loss or who is experiencing warning signs of dementia, such as difficulty completing familiar tasks. Screening also makes sense if your family and friends have noticed changes in your memory, or if you believe you're at risk due to a family history of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. Even if you have no current concerns about your memory, screening test results can serve as a baseline measurement for future comparisons.
