When Buying a Diamond, Carats Count

When it comes to determining the number of carats you want to buy in a piece of jewelry, the choice is a personal one. Whether you are buying an engagement ring or a diamond necklace, there is no "one" correct diamond carat size. To learn more about carats, read below.

Carat

The carat (ct) is a standard unit of measurement that defines a diamond's weight. One carat is 200 milligrams of actual weight. Carats are also used when defining the weight of other types of gemstones. Have you ever noticed how a one-carat diamond looks larger than a one-carat emerald? Well, that is because some gemstones are denser than others.

The weight of a smaller diamond is described in terms of "points", not carats. There are 100 points in a carat, so a 25-point diamond is 1/4 of a carat. Carat weight can also define the weight of multiple diamonds in one piece of jewelry. Two carats need not refer to a single diamond. For example, two carats could refer to the combined weight of eight 25-point diamonds.

What Carat Works Best for You?

When you start thinking about buying diamond jewelry and carat weight, there are two important tips to think about: 1) your budget, and 2) the person who will be wearing the piece. Here are some questions to consider:

"What is the occasion?"
If you are buying diamond jewelry as a gift, make sure it is occasion-appropriate. Are you looking for a tri-diamond ring to commemorate the birth of a third child, a diamond bracelet as a special treat for yourself, or that one piece of jewelry that expresses your everlasting commitment, the engagement ring? Considering the significance of the occasion will likely help you determine the ideal carat weight of your diamond jewelry.

"Will the piece be worn every day or only on special occasions?"
If the piece of jewelry is to be worn every day, you might want to choose something more diminutive in size—something that won't catch on clothing or get in the way of a tennis serve. If you're only going to wear the piece out at night or to important get-togethers, go for something that really makes a statement. Just be sure to stay within your budget.

"Who will wear the diamond?"
Lastly, consider the physical size of the intended recipient and where on the body the piece will be worn. A small-carat diamond will appear larger on a smaller hand and vice versa. Proportion and balance are essential to proper diamond buying.

No matter what carat size you choose–large or small–Kmart's quality diamonds are a sparkling tribute to the person wearing them!
