Microwaves: Variety and Convenience for your Cooking Needs

With microwave ovens increasingly being used for a variety of cooking needs, the type of microwave you select for your home should depend on what you will be using it for, your budget, and the amount of space that you have available in your kitchen. Microwaves have come a long way in the past decade or more, so it is important to educate yourself on the types of microwaves currently available before making a purchase decision.

The most popular and cost-efficient type of microwave is the countertop microwave unit. These microwaves are a popular choice because consumers can immediately start using them within minutes of removing them from the packaging and plugging them in. Countertop microwaves are usually less expensive than other types of units. They are also attractive option because they can easily be moved if you decide to relocate to a new house or apartment: just simply unplug the microwave and take it with you. One major downfall of this type of microwave is the amount of counter space they require, which could otherwise be used for other appliances or food preparation. If counter space is an issue in your kitchen, consider a different type of microwave.

If you have less counter space as well as a larger budget, an over-the-range microwave could be the best option. These microwaves tend to be more powerful than countertop varieties, cutting down the amount of time spent cooking foods. They also don't take up surface area in the kitchen, giving you more room for food prep. These microwaves are often more expensive than the countertop models, and typically require the services of an electrician or professional for installation. While they have a vent, they are also not as effective as a regular hood vent to remove steam and odors over your range. For this reason, if you use your range extensively, you might not get the results you need with this type of microwave.

A third type of microwave oven popular among homeowners is a built-in model. If you are having your kitchen remodeled, a built-in microwave allows you to custom-fit the microwave to your new cabinets. This type of appliance gives you the benefit of free counter space, while also allowing you to have an efficient hood range vent over your stovetop. Built-in microwaves are similar in cost to over-the-range microwaves, and also may require professional installation.

When shopping for microwaves, be sure to take the time to carefully consider the different cooking options and various features available with modern models. Many come with one-touch options for defrosting, and others are combined with convection ovens. Most current models feature a turning plate for even cooking. Also, compare differences in wattage, which is often indicated inside of the microwave door or on the back of the appliance. A higher wattage usually amounts to reduced cooking time.

One other consideration to keep in mind when evaluating the different types of microwaves is that these appliances come in different sizes. If you use your microwave oven frequently or often use to cook full meals on a regular basis, you may need a larger, more expensive model. A smaller basic model is adequate for those who only occasionally use the microwave oven to reheat leftovers or pop a bag of popcorn. Compact microwaves are available for apartment dwellers or those who do not have a lot of available space.

Your microwave should last for several years, so take your time in determining the type of microwave is best for you, your budget, and your kitchen.
