Really disappointed
I used to buy cheap ************* tools but they break and come with very few in the box. I decided to upgrade and shall out there 1200bucks for this kit. I told the sales guy that I was tired of sets that skipsizes and are not complete, he assured me this kit is not like that. Which is not true at all. While you get a lot more in this kit you also miss and skip alot more sizes. But first ill start from the beginning.1 Opening the box, this has got to be the worse packaged item out there and I'm not exaggerating one bit. They may have will just thrown all the tools in the box. There is a few dozen bags of tools, I no particular order, rhyme or reason. You'll have seven 12pt sockets and one 6 pt in a bag. So unpacking will be an all day affair and you better have organizers becuase this set doesn't help you there. 2 MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR TOOLS! The sales guy even said that. I am 2 hours in and about two thirds done and already I have duplicate or missing tools.I feel I got ripped off

Let me begin by stating the quality of the tools is excellent. The problem...the sockets are mixed and matched. When I buy a set of tools, I expect them to be uniform. Do you expect all 4 wheels on a new vehicle to match? Can't get customer service to do anything.

What a set of tools!!! This set will fill the old tool box and then some!!

I have always bought craftsman tools. A good quality of tool. Best part is if you break it, Sears will replace it!!! With my job we had to travel and you can always find a Sears or one of its affiliates! I would have hated to try and find the Snap-on man is some of these places!!!

Comprehensive Set

This set is comprehensive. It has an extremely wide range of styles and sizes for wrenches and sockets. The wrenches include USA made ratcheting wrenches (as of Dec '13) which are extremely nice. It also comes with a large set of screwdrivers, and nut drivers. While I am not a professional mechanic, I grew up around heavy machinery mechanics and am active with building and tinkering with a wide range of projects. I tinker with everything from old vehicles to high power electronics (operating at 10kw+) and appreciate the range of tools offered by this kit and its quality.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Very nice!

I have been wanting a good tool set to replace my hodge podge collection of cheap, mix and match tools. Decided to stop in my local Sears, just to look. This set was on sale for 30% off. Too good of a deal to pass up, so I bit the bullet and got it. Also, picked up a nice top and middle box, and bottom chest, also 30% off. I am not a professional mechanic, just a weekend warrior who happens to have a street & strip car. This set appears to have almost everything I need. I don't use air tools, already have two Craftsman torque wrenches and an inexpensive tap & die set. I did purchase some additional pliers and vice grips. I inventoried everything and nothing was missing, nor were there any duplicates. I was pleasantly surprised. I have never owned Snap-On, Mac, Matco, or any other professional grade tools, so I can't say these are or are not as good as those. However, I can say that for someone like me, this is a great tool set.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

As many have said, you NEED to double check the tools. I had some duplicates and shortages but my local sears exchanged them without hassel (besides making a extra trip into town).

Great set, Quality at its best.

This is a great set and will be my first. I am going to be a diesel tech and this set has everything besides 3/4'' sockets and ratchet which is no big deal. The quality of craftsman is great and these tools are just as good as Snap-on or Matco and cost 5 times less and you get 5 times more. There are a boatload of sockets so be sure you have plenty of holders. The plastic ones are the best. It filled up at least 17 drawers on my 56'' 23 drawer toolbox. Make sure you do a full inventory of everything. Luckly I had everything and nothing was missing. The unlimited lifetime warranty is awesome too. Overall very pleased with this set. Great job CRAFTSMAN!!!

Disappointed. Worst-in-class packaging

I just bought the 540 piece professional mechanic's tool set.  I rarely provide feedback on products but this experience was so extreme that I felt that I couldn't let it go.  I did my research on this product and there are many similar comments/reviews on the internet.  Many people said that the packaging was poorly designed and that tools are often missing and the overwhelming majority of folks suggested that one catalog and itemize the tools when unpackaging.
So, I opened my 540 piece tool set and it was in fact a complete yardsale!!!!  At first, I thought I might have received a damaged product but the box was absolutely pristine...then, as I inspected further, I realized that is was designed this way (or not designed in any way!!!).  As I started the tedious process of cataloging the 540 piece set, I then discovered that there is no rhyme or reason or method to how the products were bundled in the sealed bags.  Do you have any idea how difficult that makes the cataloging process!!!!!  I am a product design Engineer so this is particularly frustrating.  I suggest that you have one of your Sears executives buy one of these sets and see what they get.  You can't be proud of this work....Absolutely WORST IN CLASS!!!!  Also, I do have 2 of some sizes and missing wrenches as well...just like the reviews said. I haven't got to the sockets yet.  I went back to Sears to get some socket organizers before I start this tedious process...I complained to the folks in the Hardware Department and they said that they have NEVER opened a tool set or sold a tool set that has more than 200 tools where there hasn't been something missing....they also said they dread opening one for display purposes because it is a yard sale and an all day project!!!!!  I am just dumbfounded by this experience...WOW...what happened to you guys?  Craftsmen tools is your BRAND...your reputation!!!  And by the way, some of the smaller wrenches were bowed/bent.  No small wonder why Sears is struggling.

Overrall the set is a great set to start with. Just disappointed that it had no impact sockets. It coud have had at least the common sizes for car lugnuts. But once again I liked the set for a great major starter set.

Craftsman 540 pc. Mechanics Tool Set

I had such high hopes for this product, but when I recieved my order.  The box looked like it been to Iraq and back.  I heard stories of my box being removed from the aircraft and the ramper stuffing pieces back into the many holes in the box.  Now why I give this such a low rating is the fact that Sears will not replace the inevitably missing pieces.  There were only a few not the 20-50 expected after recieving my box, and hearing the story of its removal from the airline.  Sears wants me to send the item back to them then send me another...  I was like Hell NO, I will not go through that again, count every last piece and then find a suitable box and send it back to them?!?  NO.  Then have to inventory another 540 tool set.  NO, so I am sorry this could have been a great experience shopping with Sears, I say shop else where.

GOOD STARTER SET

THIS SET IS A GOOD STARTER SET I PURCHASED IT ALONG WITH MANY OTHER SETS TO REPLACE TOOL THAT HAD BEEN LOST IN A FIRE. IT HAS A GOOD DEAL OF WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO START A GOOD MECHANIC TOOL SET. THERE ARE SEVERAL ITEMS THAT ARE NOT INCLUDED THAT SHOULD BE IN A QUALITY SET; SUCH AS STUBBY WRENCHES, HIGHER QUALITY RATCHETS, HAMMERS AND ORGANIZERS FOR THE SOCKET AND WRENCHES. SEVERAL ITEMS WERE DAMAGED OR DEFECTIVE WHEN I TOOK INVENTORY OF THE SET. I TOOK THEM INTO SEARS AND THE EXCHANGED THE ONES THEY HAD AND ORDERED THE REMAINING ITEMS AND HAD THEM SET TO MY HOUSE. I LIKE THIS SET BECAUSE MOST OF THE LARGER SETS SEEM TO COME WITH MANY ?FILLER? ITEMS THEY USE TO INCREASE THE SET SIZE, SUCH AS 3 OR 4 SETS OF ALLEN WRENCHES AND SCREW DRIVERS. IN A TOOL SET YOU SHOULD GET MORE OF THE REAL TOOLS YOU NEED SUCH AS RATCHETS SOCKETS, SNAP RING PLIERS, ECT. AND YOU CAN PURCHASE THE LESS SIGNIFICANT TOOLS SEPARATELY. ALL AND ALL ITS IS A DESCENT SET TO START OFF WITH.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Overall
Pretty good tool set.

All and all, it is a lot of tools. Now that being said, what really matters is what you are going to use it for.

I liked the variety of what was offered, though truly, most people won't use much of what is in it. I think Sears knows that, and many of the tools were included because they were relatively cheap, but allowed them to get to the magic 540 number to overwhelm people with what it comes with.

What I didn't like was that it is marketed as being pretty much everything someone could use in working on a vehicle, and that it has all the important tools.  Now I waited until I bought a tool box to go with this, and while that brings another issue, I will mention it seperately. The first thing when putting the tools in the box that I noticed was that they don't give you all the sockets that they have holes for in their organizers. Which to me begs the question, if the socket is basic enough and needed enough you have it in your tool box organizer, why is it not in your huge set of tools? Maybe it is just me, but that bothers me. Now, since I didn't open my box right away, I didn't notice that I got two of one socket instead of one of each. Lesson taken away from this, is inventory your tools right away so if they are off you can go in and get it taken care of promptly. I waited, so that is my fault.

Now, my previous dislike also falls in line with another one I have. They included their ratcheting wrenches. Now, not wanting my tool box disorganized I pick up some Craftsman plastic wrench organizers with carrying handle. In putting them together, I soon realize that they don't come as a full set of wrenches. You don't get 1/4", 11/32", 13/16", 7/8", 7mm, 9mm, 17mm, or 18mm ratcheting wrench. Again, if they are such basic sizes that they are on all the wrench holders Sears makes, they should be in the set.

Aside from that I would have like to have gotten a T27 socket, as I need those. And I would have very much would have liked a Long Ball Head Hex Socket Set, since it is a mechanics set some feeler gauges, an Impact Driver maybe, or even ring pliers.  I was a little embarrassed that there wasn't a single hammer in the whole box.  I could disassemble your engine, but I couldn't hand a picture, or even knock out a dent.

And my single biggest gripe, is actually little in the grand scheme, but it matters to me. The kit didn't come with any tool organizers at all. Some of the drivers were in their plastic packaging which could be used as such, but really there wasn't any effort to be a little helpful. I know that Sears is trying to save a buck and sell a lot packaging it all together. That being said, the plastic pieces it would have taken that sell for $6 each to hold wrenches that they sell seperately, can't cost more than fifty cents each from their factory in China.  Why not throw them in, and tack on five bucks to the price. It wouldn't have really cost Sears, and it would have made for better customer satisfaction. Because what really upset me wasn't that the wrenches didn't have a holder, it was the fact that the allen wrenches didn't have one of the plastic holders to put them in, so I know what size I am reaching for. And the only reason that upsets me so much, is Sears doesn't sell that seperately. If I want one, I have to buy a cheap set just to get the organizer. It couldn't cost that much to include, could it?

Now with all that I have said, you might think I don't like my tool set.  That isn't the case at all, I love it.  I just think there are some things that should be improved, and could be easily with real effort from Sears. I would gladly pay the same amount to get 400 tools I actually need with organizers, than for 540 tools that are not as useful. I can't say the tiny wrench set that is about the size a Smurf would use will get a lot of use. I wouldn't have liked grips that instead of being shiny chrome were textured so a little oil and too quick a movement won't turn them into a projectile.  But they aren't the professional set, so I get it. Those things cost a little extra.  Right now, all I do is go to school to be a mechanic, and a little weekend work on my car.  So right now this is fine.  If you are looking for a great start to having a full toolbox, this is the way to go.  And you really do save money versus what you would have paid individually.

A great tool set for a great price.

Based off of a sale that one of the associates had told me about I waited and purchased this amazing tool set for a value that I could not pass up. I have since removed all the pieces from the box and sorted through them and arranged them in my Craftsman tool chest. The tools are a perfect compliment for any do-it-yourself individual whether they may be working on their vehicle, atv, motorcycle, and even home devices that require precicison tools. The only drawback to the set is that mine came with some unchromed sockets as well as a few sockets that may have come from a more expensive set. No complaint on my part as I have a complete set that is of course Craftsman with the Craftsman Guarantee. Overall its a great set to have especially for the money. Great tools, great durability, great diversity and a quanitity that allows for multiple projects.

Almost Everything

This is a great set that has almost everything you will ever need. I do wish that the sockets did go a little larger for things like motorcycle axles and such. I also wish it had a few more pliers. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE INVENTORY, when you first get your set take the time to sort it all out and check it against the itemized list. My father and I both purchased this set and both of our boxes were missing tools but sears was very good and just took our word for it and handed over the tools we were missing.
