National Geographic Kids is very educational! September 20, 2010

I ordered the National Geographic Kids as a gift subscription for my 8-year-old nephew. He is really into science, and he told me that this is the best gift he got for his birthday this year! It is very educational, comes with lots of illustrations, and is very affordable! Great job, National Geographic!

Advertising takes away from content October 26, 2010

I was very disappinted with this magazine. I have a subscription to National Geo for Little Kids and I love it, so I thought this one would be good too. I was wrong. While the content was okay, I was disappointed by all the advertising for different cartoons and movies. Every issue has some movie or cartoon that is hi-lighted and several pages are devoted to it. There is also ads for toys and things. I just found these ads to be a turn off and they took away from the integrity of the magazine. I can turn on the TV to find this information. I want to use the National Geo to educate my kids on science and nature!

With all the advertising, this should be free! September 26, 2010

    Cons:
    Too much advertising

I had a subscription to National Geographic's original kids magazine, World, when I was a child. In fact, I still have a couple dozen issues from about 25 years ago, which my 5 years old son has enjoyed looking through.
A few months ago, I looked on the web to see if World still existed. Happily, it did, now renamed National Geographic Kids. I ordered a two-year subscription for my son.

I wanted so much to like it. But the current magazine is chock full of advertising for candy, video games and movies, and in a way that makes it hard to separate the selling from the educating. It is a little repulsive, actually, the level to which the advertising is carried. With this amount of ads, you would think the magazine should be free.

As I sit here in front of my computer, I am looking wistfully at a May 1982 issue of World magazine. Within which, there is not one stich of advertising.

National Geographic Kids is a real kid pleaser. September 13, 2010

My 5 year old loves this magazine.  Even though some of the stories are a meant for older children, he loves to hear them especially if they include animals.  Very informative and child appropriate!
