What Is a Smart TV?

What Is a Smart TV?

A Smart Television is a powerful new device that redefines what a TV can do. Smart Televisions connect to the internet and allow you to access online media, such as movies, music and social media. A Smart TV won't replace a computer, but it will give you convenient built-in access to your favorite apps right in the comfort of your living room.

There are a few great benefits to using a Smart TV. For one, you can take advantage of a beautiful screen TV to watch videos instead of viewing them on a tiny computer screen. You can also play music through your home theater system  instead of the compact speakers on your tablet. A Smart TV also frees up other devices and simplifies your entertainment system. No longer will you have to connect your laptop to your TV to stream online videos; a Smart TV allows you to stream videos directly through your TV, freeing up your laptop to be used at the same time.

What Kind of Apps Does a Smart TV Have?

All Smart TVs will feature streaming video apps like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu Plus. These apps make perfect sense for a Smart TV and will probably be the apps you use most frequently. It doesn’t stop there, though; there's a lot more you can do on a Smart Television.

Each model will have a different offering of apps and services, but many will include social apps like Facebook and Twitter, news apps like USA Today, sports apps like ESPN, games like Angry Birds and weather apps like AccuWeather. Most will have some kind of streaming internet music or radio, such as Pandora. Some even include Skype; by adding a webcam, you may be able to have full-screen video calls with your family using your Smart Television. Some models feature a web browser that allows you to surf the Internet, effectively turning your TV into a giant computer. If you plan to surf the net using a Smart TV, consider purchasing a wireless keyboard or large QWERTY remote control to make typing easier.

What Should I Take Into Consideration When Purchasing a Smart Television?

This may go without saying, but remember that you will need an internet connection to take advantage of a Smart TV. Most Smart Televisions are able to connect to your home internet via an Ethernet cord or Wifi, but make sure before making your purchase that your new TV will have the connections you need. Think about whether you would like a USB port to connect your TV to a computer or smartphone.

Smart Televisions come in many screen sizes and types, including LED, LCD and plasma. Some 3D TVs even use Smart TV technology. Prices vary depending on the make and model, but because of its added features a Smart Television will generally be a little more expensive than a conventional TV. Also, don't forget to factor in the cost associated with certain apps that may require a paid subscription, such as Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Depending on your living room setup, a Smart TV may or may not make sense for you. If you already have an easy way to access online content on your TV, you might not need the extra functionality of a Smart Television. If you think a new Smart TV is for you, however, check out our selection here at Kmart. We offer a great selection of sizes and brands at attractive prices.

A mattress can still be structurally sound while still having other problems that keep you from falling asleep. Dust buildup, for example, is a common problem with older mattresses. It's definitely not fun to think about, but skin particles, pet hair, dander, insect parts and dust mites can all add up to create an unhealthy sleeping environment, especially for those with breathing problems. Consider replacing your mattress if you're noticing that coughing and sneezing is preventing you from getting good sleep, or that you're waking up with a sore throat and stuffy nose.
